Ronaldo Leads Emotional Tribute to Diogo Jota as Portugal Secures World Cup Spot

Portugal’s qualification for the World Cup Round of 16 coincided with the one-year anniversary of Diogo Jota’s tragic death, prompting an ‘unbelievable’ tribute from Cristiano Ronaldo and the squad.

Portugal clinched a spot in the World Cup Round of 16 following a gripping 2-1 victory over Croatia, a win that carried an extraordinary emotional weight. The triumph, secured almost exactly a year after the passing of former teammate Diogo Jota, saw captain Cristiano Ronaldo and his squad honor the late star in a poignant display that Ronaldo himself described as a “paradox of life.”

A Poignant Victory Against Croatia

As the final whistle blew, sealing Portugal’s progression, a wave of emotion swept through the squad. Ronaldo, alongside his teammates, held aloft a jersey bearing Jota’s number 21, a powerful symbol of remembrance. Later, during post-match interviews, Ronaldo wore the same number, telling Fox US, “It’s a paradox of life, it’s unbelievable. We knew it before the game. It was a very special moment. We talked today, as a group, about it, about the paradox of life. It’s unbelievable.”

The match itself proved a fitting stage for such a tribute. Coach Roberto MartĂnez highlighted the significance, stating, “We managed to qualify for the Round of 16 on the day we honor Diogo Jota and AndrĂ©, as well as Ricardo Carvalho’s father,” referencing his assistant who recently suffered a loss. MartĂnez emphasized the eerie coincidence that Croatia, the team Portugal had just overcome, was also the last opponent Jota scored against for the national team. “There are many connotations in this match, and I think it was a deserved victory,” he added.

The Uncanny Coincidence of Jota’s Legacy

Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva tragically died on July 3 of last year when their car crashed in Spain. The Liverpool player, then 28, was on his way back to England to begin pre-season training. Jota had represented Portugal 49 times between 2019 and 2025, netting 14 goals for his country. His last goal for the national side came in June 2024 during a friendly match – against none other than Croatia.

This wasn’t the first time Jota’s memory had been honored during the tournament. Earlier, a black-and-white photograph of him appeared on the giant screen at Houston Stadium before Portugal’s opening match against DR Congo, underscoring the deep impact he left on his teammates and the nation. The collective tribute serves as a stark reminder of Jota’s enduring presence within the Portuguese football family, even as they chase World Cup glory.
